Sam and Grand Design did a great job repairing my stone patio. The patio was sinking due to poor workmanship with the original installation. I know it can be a real pain to correct someone else’s mess, but Sam did it and for a reasonable price. Sam at The Grand Designs earned a five-star review from me and my family! Our yard had three problem areas and he solved each one. He extended our downspouts with river rock, so water now drains away without washing out mulch. He added a stone and concrete threshold at each fence gate where clay from the neighbor’s yard kept piling up, which fixed the sticky gate and the mess. He also removed compacted clay around the patio and brought in quality soil, so the grade is right and the space looks finished. Sam and his team were punctual, respectful of our property, communicated clearly, and left the site tidy each day. After the first heavy rain, everything worked exactly as promised. I’d actually give them a 4.5/5. Sam and his team did beautiful work for us. We are extremely happy with the final result. His team was professional and kind and did extra little jobs around the yard like weeding our flower beds which we were so grateful for. The reason I am choosing to give a 4.5 instead of a 5 is simply because they didn’t have a set schedule and weren’t great about communicating when they would show up to work. They showed up at random times in the morning, probably because they were grabbing supplies? But sometimes would show up as late as 10am, then only be able to work for an hour or so before the rain put a pause on their work. What was supposed to only take 3-5 days ended up taking closer to 3 weeks due to lots of starts and stops. If you choose to go with these guys, which I definitely would recommend, you’ll just have to be flexible with their timing and be able to work around weather. Sam did great work on our back yard. The transformation was exactly what we had hoped for. He turned a severely sloped back yard into a functional outdoor space by incorporating a two tier wall to build up the slope to meet a level plane that now ties into our patio area. The wall consists of a lower level of boulders that builds up to a clean block wall with stone caps to finish. The full length is around ~200 linear feet. He also built in a set of custom steps entering into the patio and added another half wall to the side of the house to transition into the back yard and create a better water run off and drainage path. He matched the stone caps to the back perimeter wall so all the materials are consistent for both walls. We had a very steep hill in our front yard. The area was tired and very unattractive. We wanted a front yard "wow" and that's what we got! Sam was very creative in designing a series of curved walls that really accented the space. Besides the cosmetic side, the construction was solid with good drainage provisions. Our downspout extensions leading to our french drains were horribly cracked and constantly leaking so we desperately needed them replaced. I saw Sam and his crew working on french drains in the neighborhood so I stopped and asked if he would come provide a quote.
